Snowsports In Hochgurgl

The Hochgurgl-Obergurgl ski area is just 20 minutes drive up the valley from Solden in the Otztal Alps. The Otztal tourist board likes to say that 'Nature provides the Otztal with snow guarantee, its inhabitants created a holiday paradise'. We've never been to paradise but if our experience is anything to go by they could be right!

Skiing

The linked area of Hochgurgl-Obergurgl is one of the highest resort areas in Austria so is quite snow sure. However there is no glacier skiing. If you wish to do some glacier skiing then you can head down the road to nearby Sölden.

Beginners – Beginners are well catered for with the Mahdstuhl nursery slopes just below Obergurgl village. Beginners' slopes are covered on the lift pass, some rising to almost 3,000m with spectacular views.

Intermediates – Pistes on the Festkogel and Gaisberg in Hochgurgl are mainly above the three line and lead right down to the Obergurgl village. Exciting tree skiing around Steinmann lift while, Hochgurgl offers a variety of long challenging runs.

Advanced – The area has also some surprisingly good advanced skiing. The Hohe Mut is one the Torol`s biggest runs. Sattel also have some excellent out off-piste with a ski route made with fresh powder. Black runs are on the side of Hochgurgl from the top of the Wurmkogl at 3082m.

Snowboarding

Although not a top boarder destination, all of the slopes of Hochgurgl and Obergurgl are opened to boarders. Indeed rails and lift makes free riding easy. Beginners can access most of the slopes without having to ride draglifts. There’s some good off-piste potential for more advanced riders particularly around the Steinmann chair in the Hohe Mut sector. There’s also a snowboard park.
